Description

Since its first edition in 1990, this has become the standard reference book on assessment in Recreational Therapy. As with the earlier editions, the purpose of this book is to provide both the therapist and the student with specific, critical information about the assessment process, specific tools, and specific standards related to assessment. The information on national assessments, such as the RAI/MDS for long-term care, is especially important to therapists. The fourth edition has 726 pages with five new assessments and updated information on all national and international standards. This book is used in over fifty colleges and nine different countries!

I'm currently in school, getting my master's degree in recreational therapy. This book is absolutely amazing. I spent my first year of grad school fretting over assessments - what should be included, what should an assessment's results accomplish, how would one go about creating an assessment, what are the standard assessments used, should they be based on a model or by interventions offered, etc.. This book clears up ALL of that. It contains guidance on the purpose of assessments, how to create one, what the standard and most-used assessments are, THE ASSESSMENTS THEMSELVES (I was infuriated one semester after another that they weren't available for students to review and become familiar with.), as well as information on validity/reliability and which populations each assessment would be best suited for. I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but I spent two nights in a row just reading through this thing FOR FUN. Long story short, it has what you need and it presents it in a logical and easy (even fun!) to read way. If you're a student in rec therapy or a rec therapist, odds are your life will be better with this book in it.
